Engineering Makerspace

Join us in the makerspace and learn to use prototyping and manufacturing tools for projects, research or group training. You’ll learn to use the latest manufacturing technologies and develop skills that complement your studies.

The makerspace is an inclusive space where collaboration, creativity and innovation can thrive. You don’t need prior knowledge or experience in design, construction or manufacturing. Faculty experts will provide a safe and accessible introduction to all the tools and processes available in the workspace.

3D Printing Workshops

Engineering is pleased to announce a 3D printing workshop series for students in the Fall 2024 semester.  Introductory sessions will be held every Friday from September 27th through November 8th covering the basics of filament (FDM) printing and slicer software. Spots are limited; check out available sessions in the makerspace calendar and e-mail makerspace@viu.ca with your program and student number to register.

Student users

You can take part in regularly scheduled workshops and training sessions, or your instructor may request the space for completing assignments.

Faculty users

Faculty may request shop time for course delivery and research on a cost-recovery basis.

In the Engineering makerspace, you can build your projects using a variety of tools:

  • Woodworking equipment
    • Hand saws, handheld power saws (reciprocating, circular, and jigsaws), a sliding compound miter saw, and a wood bandsaw
  • Metalworking equipment
    • Hacksaws, handheld power tools (angle grinder, die grinders, metal band saw)
    • Sheet metal tools (three-in-one shear, brake, roller)
    • Manual milling machine
    • Manual metal lathe
  • Rapid prototyping equipment
    • 3D printers (Makerbot Replicators, Makerbot Method X, and other filament 3D printers)
  • Automated manufacturing equipment
    • A 60 watt CO2 laser engraver (Epilog Mini 24)
      • Capacity of 12 x 24 x 1 inches
    • A CNC router table (CANCAM C2)
      • Capacity of 48 x 96 x 2 inches

Students can use the makerspace for course projects, research and professional development.  Projects must be original, non-commercial, and serve a specific assignment or research project:

  • 3D prints must be original work or related to a university project.
  • Projects must be appropriate for an assignment.
  • Projects must make efficient use of time and materials.
  • Profanity, weapons, or otherwise tasteless projects are not allowed.
  • Engineering will decline projects that are excessive or wasteful.
